The Many Roles of Being a Teen Mom

Teenager….. Sarah Currier is19 years old and started the Learning Together Program in September 2008. Her 2 year old son Matthew attends PlayWorks Child Center while his mother is enrolled in the program. Sarah is one of the students who was involved in the Pregnancy Prevention class. This was a high interest of many young moms because they wanted to send a message to other teens that being a teen mom was very hard.  They researched information such as various forms of birth control and statistics resulting from teen pregnancy. They delivered three separate presentations at a Chamber of Commerce Mixer, to the SAPCC staff and to the general public at a SAPCC open house.

Student ….. Sarah came into the Learning Together with 9 credits from Springfield High School…. She completed all graduation requirements (25 credits) in December 2009, in a little over one year.  She received her diploma with the graduating class on June 19, 2010. She enjoyed the flexible schedule of classes and the support she received one-on-one from class facilitators.

Mother …. Sarah has enjoyed receiving parenting information such as “Ages & Stages” and has gained parenting skills by working in childcare as her worksite and by attending different parenting classes, such as ”Positive Discipline: The First Three Years “ and “ Partners in Parenting Education” (PIPE). These parenting classes and the hands-on worksites have given Sarah confidence in her parenting skills. Her son is a happy, healthy child who enjoys socializing with his peers.

Employee…..Sarah says that she did not have any work experience before attending the Learning Together Program. She has had an opportunity to work as a childcare aide in both the preschool and infant/toddler classroom, she learned retail skills in Myrtle’s Closet and how to run a cash register. She learned new recipes and gained culinary skills when she worked in the cooking worksite. Her favorite place was to work in reception. There she learned to use a multi-line phone system, as well as other office equipment.  She strengthened her computer skills as well as her communication skills in this worksite. She has an interest in clerical work and recently secured a job in that line of work.

Community Member ….. Sarah has been able to develop strong friendships with other students. She volunteered at Myrtle's Closet - a Thrift Store on several Saturdays to meet her high school requirement for community service. She has developed the ability to advocate for herself and others and has a strong desire to remain self-sufficient. Sarah has grown all-around as a mature young adult ready to take on the challenges of the world.
